Really? It's been that long since I posted anything! Well, it's time to get serious about Granny Girls again! We have had so many adventures in the past 9 months and I want to put them all on here but I need to get real and just start from today.

We have the next 2 months planned. On June 14th we will have a book swap. Do you have books you've read and can recommend to us? Do you have books you know you will never get around to reading? Maybe you have an e-reader now and can let go of some of your books. If you are like me, the e-reader will never replace physical books no matter how much I love it but maybe you are looking for a great summer read. If this is you, join us at 7:00 pm at Little People's Academy (543 N. Ridge Ave) and bring any books you are willing to let go. You will be able to "shop" and pick up anything you want and find a hidden gem for yourself.

You will want to get a head start for our July meeting on the 12th. Dixie Murphy will be our guest and will discuss her newly released book "When Greed Turns Deadly". I am about 50% of the way through it and it is a true page turner. It's about a double murder committed about 20 years ago right here in Idaho Falls. 2 women were shot while they slept in the home of one of the ladies. I believe this is Dixie's first book and it is so well written you think you are watching an episode of "48 Hours" or "Hardline". She will tell us all about her journey writing and publishing this as well as what's happened in the 20 years since the murder. You don't have to have read the book to join us but I highly recommend it. You can purchase it at Barnes & Noble or on Amazon for $23.95 or it is available for Kindle or your e-reader through Amazon for $7.99. I purchased both-the hard copy so Dixie could autograph it and the e-version so I can take it with me in my purse. This will be held at Little People's Academy at 7:00 pm as well. Everyone is welcome to come to these events so invite your husband, kids, friends, and neighbors. It will be one you won't want to miss.
We have started our first Granny Girls cookbook! If you have a fabulous recipe for ANYTHING we want it. We are especially interested in your mom's and grandmother's recipes and any modern updates to them. For instance, I have the best homemade caramel recipe but it's one of the old style that you stand over a hot stove and stir and stir and stir..... but Hallie has one she claims is just as good that she makes in the microwave. We want both types.

I made homemade lip gloss with the day care kiddos yesterday and it turned out great so I'm going to put that in.

This is not just for Granny Girls members but is open to everyone you know. Ask your mom, grandma, aunt, cousin, sister, etc to submit their recipes too. The more we have the better our book will be.

You will be able to go online and type your own recipe in just like you want it to appear. To start, go to:Cookbook Publisher
Since our July meeting is all about crochet, I had to share. My sister bought the cutest crochet sandals and I said "I can make those!" These aren't exactly the same but I think mine turned out pretty nice. We loved the crochet class so much and had a lot of requests to do a class teaching you how to read a crochet pattern so that is what we have planned.

Hallie will teach a beginner's pattern, a very fashionable shrug, SuZann will teach an intermediate afghan pattern and Lindsi will teach an advanced pattern. No matter what your level of skill, there will be something for you and you may be surprised at how easy the intermediate and advanced patterns are. I've attached a picture of the afghan. It is a fun gingham afghan that you can make in any color way. The pattern was done in blues but when I made mine I made it in greens. I can see this in a soft pink for a baby or bright red and white for a summer picnic.

The class will be at the Vogue again at 7:00pm Thursday, July 14th. I don’t think our kids know what an apron is. The principle use of grandma’s apron was to protect the dress underneath because she only had a few. It was easier to wash aprons than dresses and they used less material, but along with that, it served as a potholder for removing hot pans from the oven. It was wonderful for drying children’s tears, and on occasion was even used for cleaning out dirty ears.

From the chicken coop, the apron was used for carrying eggs, fussy chicks, and sometimes half-hatched eggs to be finished in the warming oven. When company came, those aprons were ideal hiding places for shy kids. And when the weather was cold, grandma wrapped it around her arms.

Those big old aprons wiped many a perspiring brow, bent over the hot wood stove. Chips and kindling wood were brought into the kitchen in that apron. From the garden, it carried all sorts of vegetables. After the peas had been shelled, it carried out the hulls. In the fall, the apron was used to bring in apples that had fallen from the trees.

When unexpected company drove up the road, it was surprising how much furniture that old apron could dust in a matter of seconds. When dinner was ready, grandma walked our onto the porch, waved her apron, and the men knew it was time to come in from the fields to dinner.

It will be a long time before someone invents something that will replace that “old time apron” that served so many purposes.

 Remember:

Grandma used to set her hot baked apple pies on the windowsill to cool. Her granddaughters set theirs on the windowsill to thaw. They would go crazy now trying to figure out how many germs were on that apron. (I don’t think I ever caught anything from an apron!)
Granny Girlhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12050019903130122015noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7369189164305072104.post-47070399684426667022011-06-09T09:28:00.001-07:002011-06-09T09:28:11.777-07:00Granny Girls meeting tonightCome join us at Granny Girls tonight, 7:00 pm at the Vogue. My favorite is on these flip flops.

I made them for my granddaughter, Caroline, who lives in Florida and is celebrating her 9th birthday TODAY!!!

I have a plain white tee shirt that is just her size and I'm going to put flowers on it.

Next I think I'll put them on a purse.

Will the madness ever end?

Probably not.Granny Girlhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12050019903130122015noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7369189164305072104.post-36876299007906493902011-04-18T16:25:00.000-07:002011-04-18T16:25:07.774-07:00Tee Shirt Necklace TutorialHere's the link for the flowered tee shirt necklace tutorial that I promised you. If you are more comfortable with reading patterns, click on the link and it will take you to a very easy pattern from Red Heart.

Both will help you if you can't remember the instructions Hallie gave us and you can refer back to them over and over.Granny Girlhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12050019903130122015noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7369189164305072104.post-33793321286709693242011-03-14T19:46:00.000-07:002011-03-14T19:46:14.516-07:00How to Crochet and Felt a Headband With a Flower Day 48Granny Girlhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12050019903130122015noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7369189164305072104.post-62832372929392330092011-03-14T19:19:00.000-07:002011-03-14T19:19:48.725-07:00Crochet Headbands

This is the crochet headband we made at the last Granny Girls. We had such a great time. I almost finished my headband and 2 or 3 of the "grannies" actually finished theirs before they left. I have pictures but will have to wait until tomorrow to put them up.

Next month the gathering will be on April 14th at the Vogue again. Plan on joining us.
